Imperial Islamic Society; The Dynastic State and Agriculture and Trade (762-766)

The Dynastic State:
-Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal societies very much alike. Reflected Steppe traditions. MH

-Emperors had authority by personal devotion to a religion and their military skills. MH
-Early emperors did as they pleased; ex- made laws and controled the religion of their subjects. ET
-Many family rebellions to try to take over the throne in the Mughal and Safavid and eventually Ottoman empire. MH
-Women played some important roles in managing the Islamic empires. ex. wives and daughters of emperors helped consult. MH


Agriculture and Trade:

Food Crops- (SM)

Islamic empires were based on agriculture.
Relied mostly on wheat and rice .
Crop production paid for armies.
Colombian exchange brought new crops like maize, potatoes, tomatoes, ect. but maize was for animal food not human.
Also brought tobacco and coffee. (edited by ET)


Tobacco and coffee- (SM)

Coffee houses was becoming very popular and with coffee often meant smoking tobacco.
Coffee and tobacco were viewed badly by some people who said it was taking time out of religious practice and the ashes were bad and could start fires.
Also at one point coffee and tobacco were illegal and it was worse to go to a coffee house than a tavern, and people were executed for going to them.

1. Shah Abbas promoted Ishafan as a trading center, even allowing Christians acess. This allowed center to flourish.
2. Mughals did not trade as much 4 2 reasons: economy already provided enough and rulers concentrated on own land empire. Still, some trade bolstered economy.
3. Indians formed trading companies of own and went as far as Rusia and Persia.
4. Populations diverse: Ottomans had Christians and Jews, Mughals had Hindus (in addition 2 Muslims.)
5. Portugese Goa became center of Christianity missionary in India. Children sent there 2 learn. AKbar welcomed missionaries but did not commit, so as 2 not alienate his subjects.
6. Akbar not strict with Islam either. Developed own Divine Faith, mostly of Islam but also Hinduism and Zoroastrianism. Religion monotheistic, but emperor was glorified ("lord of wisdom.")
7. In Islamic empires, people did not have 2 b Muslim, but got protection if they did.
